2010: A turn to ‘real beauty’?

Barbie’s like Heidi Montag, Pamela Anderson, and Victoria Beckham are so last decade. What’s in now isn’t the typical california beauty: big boobs, small waist, plumped lips and pulled skin. No, real beauties like Lauren Conrad, Hayden Panettiere and Natalie Portman are the ones to watch and drool over in the year (and decade) ahead.

What is it with the ‘Barbie’ look that has us all so fixated? Heidi Montag recently disclosed in an upcoming issue of People Magazine, that she underwent 10 cosmetic surgeries in one day to achieve, “the best me” she possibly could. My question is, what was so bad about the original version of her? She was cute, approachable, and best of all — real! So maybe she could’ve had a little nose job to shrink it down a little… she didn’t need to go overboard with the whole package. That day, some of the procedures she had done included: breast enlargements, chin reduction, nose job and more, in one day — and she’s says she’s not done yet!

Montag is married to her MTV’s The Hills co-star, Spencer Pratt. The pair, known as ‘Speidi’ (pictured above), are quite thirsty for media attention. But when it comes to plastic surgery, it seems that Heidi feels far from quenched. For the reality-TV-star-turned-wannabe-singer, going under the knife has become similar to her feeling about attention in the media… it is an “obession,” to which she openly admits. The story will develop as People hits newsstands on tomorrow.

I have to admit that the once cute and quirky star definitely has given herself some sex appeal. However, someone needs to draw the line. In, I’d say the third season of ‘The Hills’, Montag actually looked good (below left). She shrank her nose a bit, got a boob job (which was a little bigger than she needed), and still had a bit of her cuteness. Now she is trying so hard to be a ‘Playboy’ pinup, that she has lost what is was that’s attractive about her. I have to admit, she looks pretty freaky on the cover of People (above).

hedi-before-2In an interview with MTV Canada last year after her performance at the Miss Universe Pageant, Montag told host Jessi Cruickshank that she thinks “God created plastic surgeons”, in retort to a question about not being satisfied with what god has given her. Montag has claimed to be an extremely religious person, a ploy in my opinion for a more pristine image. I’m not saying the girl isn’t religious, I’m just saying that she never used to preach the way she now does. Or maybe its just that before she never had the platform before. Whatever the reason, Heidi obviously has an addiction… but is she the only one?

Hollywood has created an illusion of the ideal form of beauty as a bleached blonde, over processed, and fake. The stats are astounding, the amount of young women subjecting themselves to plastic surgery has skyrocketed in the last decade, and its all because of people, like Heidi, that are in the spotlight for it. Think about it, Heidi is getting a lot of attention, more than she had pre-surgery. What does that say about society? I think it means we’re all attracted to an accident, and all of us are slowing down to take a look at the damage before we carry along driving.

Plastic surgery addiction has led, on more than one occasion, to celebs looking like they’re no longer human, a few examples are pictured below. Someone needs to help Heidi out and stop her before she turns herself inhuman as well. Bad plastic surgery happens when someone feels pressure to look good and they have more money than brains. Which is obviously the case with Heidi, and pretty much the majority of celebrities out there.

There has been and needs to be a push for real in this industry. Young women nowadays are so easily pressured by the media. The reach of which isvivica-fox-breastsunimaginable. With the rise of the internet, ‘reality’ TV, and so on and so forth, the weight the media has on our poshwhitney-porteveryday lives is huge. We need positive role models, like Montag’s former co-star, Whitney Port (left), to step into the lime light and lead the way into 2010 with positivity and appreciation for natural beauty.

I’m all for cutting and dying and frying your hair. Powder up, gloss up, glue on, stick on, spray on — do what you will at a salon or in the bathroom. But don’t nip and tuck just because you don’t feel you fit in to an unrealistic category of ‘beauty’ that has unfortunately been embedded in our minds. Its fun to play around with your looks, go from blonde to brunette to red head. All of these are changes you can alter at any time. But once you botch your body with a knife, there is no going back. Enhance what you’ve got, and forget about whatever it is you don’t have. God (or whatever creator you believe in), gave you a canvas upon which to paint… thats what make up is for.

Shake what your momma gave ya…
