Alexander McQueen’s Final Collection

McQueen Final CollectionAlexander McQueen’s final Fall 2010 RTW Collection was shown earlier this week. His collection, which was shown during Paris Fashion Week, was a quiet and dignified affair, as it was only shown by appointment for small groups of editors. This giving a time for those who knew his intimately a time to reflect on all he had accomplished. The 16 pieces in his fall collection where  80% finished when McQueen passed away. The collection uses similar element, like the head pieces, from his earlier collection and really reflect how far he had come as a designer and a craftsman.

The collection was inspired by the Dark Ages and the medieval period of art. He used digital printed fabric with images of angels and demons, which were painted in churches during this time period. He interestingly combined these image prints with jacquard prints and red silk which creates a very rich combination. It is a combination of draped and heavily craft garments that embrace the skill that McQueen has acquired of the year. Even though the construction is far from simple, he has given the garments a sense of simple elegance , which is the spirit of the medieval time he had been studying.

The show stopping piece of the collection is the final piece, a dress with a high collared cut away jacket that was made entirely of golden feathers and is paired with an embroidered, layered white tulle skirt.  It is a shame that this is the last collection that this incredible designer will show.
