Hair don’ts

He's Just Not That Into You

Not much explaining to do here, the pictures pretty much speak for themselves. The above shot from the film ‘He’s Just Not That Into You’, is 50% hot and 50% not in terms of hair. Can you guess which style I hate?

Here are some of the biggest hair don’ts I can’t think of, and some examples of how to alter certain looks for something a little more modern and fashionably fresh.

1) Prom Hair

bad, bad, awful, bad. The polished prom do belongs back in the 90’s.

img_7Jessica Alba (left) and Lauren Conrad ( below) demonstrate how to do an up-do properly, with a bit of an effortless chic vibe. These hot hollywood starlets are style icons and over the last few years have few (if any) fashion faux pas. Take your tips from them, bring in a picture when you are getting your hair done up so that your stylist doesn’t get carried away!

2) Horrible Highlights

Kate G HighlightsReality star Kate Gosselin (right) shows off how sucky sh*tty highlights look. This look is far too choppy and Kate needs to add another shade of blonde and another shade of brown to even out the look so she doesn’t look like she has tiger stripes.

3) The Poof

Though this look can be done correctly if its tamed, the above examples show how horribly wrong it can go. The worst is MTV’s Jersey Shore cast membermtv-jersey-shore (right), showing off how hideous gina style can be, and how wrong the poof can go.

Hair goddess Lauren Conrad (below) shows how to work this look properly, minimal poof is the key!

lauren-conrad-hair-poof There are other wonderful ways to get your hair off your face, without poofing it up on top of your head. These styles (pictured below) work well with bangs and longer pieces, and you can be very creative with the way you twist and pull your hair! Check out how Rachel Bilson, Hayden Panettiere and Jennifer Aniston have done it!

4) Crimps

A horrible 80’s trend has reappeared from time to time and we really need to remember that certain styles DO NOT reoccur. I’m writing this one because it is one of the worst hair styles of all time, and I just want to set the record straight and show you how to alter this style to fit todays style and beauty standards. How bad are these looks? Tyra Banks, Melissa Joan Hart and Portia De Rossi

If you like having waves in your hair, you don’t have to pull out your old crimping iron. Instead, try a beachy look by using your hair dryer and a round brush. Look at how these stars have done it. Don’t you think Minka Kelly, Kate Hudson, Ashlee Simpson, and Kate Beckinsale look fresh, feminine, and sophisticated. You don’t want to look like you just returned from vacation and removed your braids, you want to look like you just stepped off the beach!

5) Big bangs

imagesSome people just don’t know when to stop cutting. When I wanted bangs in high school, I went home one day and started cutting, and found out just hot bad that can be. Needless to say, I was lucky it was a weekend and I could wear a hat till I was able to get an appointment at the hairdresser to fix the mess I made. I was at least a young teenage girl that got a little carried away, but these grown women don’t really have excuses for their oversized bangs. I absolutely hate this look, it makes both Fergie and Kate Walsh’s (right) forehead look like it must be huge hiding under there.

audrina-patridge-gorgeous-in-bangsBangs are supposed to be light and flirty, like Audrina Patridge’s (pictured left). This style is meant to highlight your face and draw attention to your features, not away from them! Another great example of how hot bangs can be is demonstrated by a new face at Coco Models, Nina (below)

IMG_45736) Bad Colour

A huge hair don’t is bad colouring. Everyone goes through their experimental stage with their hair, where they either cut it off, grow it long, dye it, or highlight it. I naturally have light, light brown hair… but I dyed it BLEACH blonde in high school, and I forever will have to live with my grad photos. Though lots of people loved it, I definitely think I went a bit over board. Luckily, by university I learned to tame it with some low lights, and now I’m darker than my natural colour. So, experiment as you will, but don’t get attached to a bad colour, because your features are the thing that will suffer. When I look back at pictures of myself, all I see if blonde, blonde, blonde. Lauren Conrad went through a similar thing, unfortunately she will have to live with the pictures of her faux pas all over the internet. When we first met LC on MTV’s Laguna Beach (below top), she had super blonde californian hair. Now (below bottom), she has gone back to the more natural look, and I have to say, she looks WAY better. Conrad has emerged as one of Hollywood’s hottest young stars, with her effortless and natural look. Her features are now more noticeable, this beauty doesn’t need to hide behind all the blonde!

Her former best-friend and former co-star Heidi Montag, on the other hand, went from a cute natural look, to ablonde blur of extensions. Heidi shows what happens when good people (?) get carried away with bad hair. Hello Barbie!

Another MTV girl, Whitney Port, went from the californian blonde to a more natural look. Now living in New York City, Whitney is a fashion and style icon. She looks so much younger and fresher with a more natural, darker blonde.

All these girls are obviously gorgeous, and at least two of three girls got their blonde right eventually!  But hey, Heidi isn’t exactly a style icon (have you seen her line? A little bit whore-ish).

7) Bad Idea – Crazy Colours

Here is the last one, but I don’t even know what category to put this in. So, here is just the ‘bad idea’ category. I could waste my time posting pictures of Pink and Avril Lavigne in here with their strangely coloured do’s, but instead I’ll just let Drew Barrymore sum it up for all of them, pictured here in my home base, Toronto.
