Don’t let today’s plus six degree weather fool you, winter is definitely still here. At the top of the list of winter annoyances, nudging against snow shoveling and ice cold winds, are chapped lips. For those that suffer, chapped lips can be a nuisance, especially when applying lipstick. Chapped lips can be caused by the decrease of our skin’s natural oils due to cold, dry air, and wind. They can also be caused by frequent wetting of the lips and even a possible allergy to lipstick dyes.
Chapped lips can be quite uncomfortable, so before the temperature drops back down below zero, check out these tips to get your lips from cracked and dry to luscious and soft:
- Massage dry lips with a generous dollop of petroleum jelly. Allow it to get to work for a couple of minutes to soften your skin. Then, gently rub your lips with a warm, damp facecloth. As the petroleum jelly is removed, the flakes of skin will come with it.
- Smooth your lips morning and night with a lip balm.
- Switch to a moisturizing lipstick to prevent your lips from drying out during the daytime.
If your lips are still suffering, make sure you keep your body hydrated by drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water daily, and avoid sun damage to your lips by wearing spf lip balm on sunny days.
