The Return of the Invisibrow

by Jamie on January 19, 2010

Redheads and pale girls alike: rejoice! 2010 is the year for you. No longer must you dye your snow white eyebrows or colour them with your brown eye pencil. Invisible eyebrows are the new trend for 2010, a strong contrast to the heavy black caterpillars from last year. Thank model Laura Stone and her blonde eyebrows for the switch from hair to barely there.

invisibrowAs we all know, fashion is cyclical, and even invisibrows have been seen before. During Queen Elizabeth’s rein, women mimiced the Queen’s high forehead by powdering, plucking, or entirely removing their brows.

The object of the game: make a bold, eye-catching statement. If you fell victim to last year’s large and in charge brows and find it difficult retreating, here are some tips to get the new invisibrow:
for a temporary loss of brow fill an empty mascara tube with liquid concealer, swipe across the brow, and finish with foundation powder.
for a more permanent look, visit a spa and have your brows professionally lightened with a mild peroxide.
for the truely bold and brave (and willing to take a trip back to early 90s Kristen McMenamy) take a razor and shave those babies off.

Balance your lighter-than-air brows with smokey eyes and heavy lip colour for an even stronger impact. Or dust your face with nude shades for a much lighter approach, a good daytime look.

Makeup artist Pat McGrath is responsible for bringing the invisibrow to runways such as Balenciaga and Prada for Fall 2009, and Givinchy for Spring 2010.
“It’s both retro and futuristic and allows for countless possibilities for different makeup looks,” McGrath says. “Dramatic makeup is in, and versatility is the key to creativity.”
