Today’s fashions go by in a flash and a flurry of fabrics, cuts, patterns, and the occasional sequin. As new trends arrive in stores, new trends are already seeping into our minds through the mass communication device we know as the internet. It’s hard to keep up, really. The most stable as of late have been pant styles. For almost 4 years I have been wearing the low rise skinny jean, and I’m sure a lot of you have too. However unflattering it may be to some shapes, every girl seems to own a pair. Come to think of it, I cannot recall the style before skinny jeans. They have permeated my brain as much as they have permeated every store in the city, and have stuck there for many years. But not now! As summer wanes, those high-waisted shorts all the hip kids are wearing will turn into high-waisted pants, ridding us of the accidental plumber’s butt we’ve all had the pleasure of trying to hide. Leg widths will grow various amounts, from bootcut to full-blown flare (Loose-fitting flares, of course. None of those tight hard-hitting ‘70s disco cuts). The women from Vogue are quoted as saying the “boot-leg is the new silhouette – meet your new skinny jean!” and “the flare leg… an overriding definitive nod to the seventies” – pretty solid evidence of the dwindling power of the skinny jean. Don’t worry, however. You don’t have to rush home and throw a ceremonial burning of all things skinny (unless that’s your bag), apparently the skinny leg is still in, but now it must share the limelight with other styles on the shelves. It’s a refreshing change to see more than one pant style doted within a single season. So this fall, indulge your pins with all sorts of sweet treats from flared leg, boot-leg, to straight leg, and back ‘round to a few superslim shapes, in both high and low waists. It’s diversity season!
